what we do...
Our primary aim is to reduce the number of stray cats and kittens living in Wanaka and the surrounding areas of the Upper Clutha.
Founded in August 2018, our work is undertaken by a small number of dedicated volunteers who care for these stray cats and kittens in their own homes.
Kittens and younger cats that are able to be socialised receive a vet consult, are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and registered with New Zealand Companion Animal Register. These cats remain in foster care until adoption.
Cats and older kittens that are unable to be socialised receive a vet consult, are neutered, vaccinated, ear-tipped for identification, and returned to their original location. This is in line with international Trap Neuter Return (TNR) practices.

Cat Rescue Wanaka are proud to support Companion Animals New Zealand by taking part in a pilot programme to establish a national database of animals in shelter and rescue care.
The aim of a national register is to gain an understanding of the number of animals involved in shelters throughout NZ, the capability of shelters to accommodate these animals, and use this information to improve welfare outcomes for both the animals and shelter personnel.
